Many a Mini gearbox will need to be in top condition, as Sunday 5th August will see the 4th round of the Mini Sport Cup take place near the picturesque Solway Coast, in the Scottish Borders. Part of the HRCR ‘oldSTAGER’, the event is open to all competitors with a classic Mini.
Separated into two classifications – the Mini Sport Junior Cup, which is open for drivers aged 17-25 and the senior event, the Mini Sport Cup – the rally represents the halfway point in the 2018 competition. The team here at Mini Sport are delighted to see the event becoming increasingly popular, with more classic Mini’s finding their way from retirement to use their natural racing ability to compete in a thrilling, no no-nonsense stage rally championship.
The Mini Sport Cup 2018 – Round 4.
The 2018 competition has already seen events take place in Weston Park, Epynt and Dalton – the fifth and sixth rounds will be contested in Belgium, during the Tour of Flanders with the final two rounds taking place in Otterburn and Blyton Park respectively.
Organised by the Solway Car Club, The Solway Coast Historic Rally will start at Dundrennan Solway Ranges and will feature 40 miles of challenging roads. The 2017 event was a wet affair, with a pothole-strewn road causing issues for the drivers, many of whom were forced off the course and had to retire from the race as a result. The event did at least bring out some inspired ingenuity from some of the racers, however – one competitor undertook an entire Mini gearbox rebuild in less than a day just to drive in the rally. Now that’s dedication!
Although, we hope there won’t be a repeat of the wet of last year, we’re also hoping the weather will be slightly cooler than June’s Dalton event, with the hot temperatures we’ve been experiencing of late also causing problems for some of the teams! Whatever the weather conditions, we’re very much looking forward to seeing a day of fantastic racing as these classic cars continue to keep the spirit of the classic Mini alive.
